Significant support for energy-intensive steel production
The total government support exceeds CZK 2 billion ($95.86 million), distributed among relevant producers from sectors considered at risk of carbon leakage.
For Třinecké Železárny, which is facing high energy intensity, compensation helps offset the additional costs of emission quotas flowing through energy prices.
CEO Roman Heide stressed that without this, the competitiveness of the steel industry would suffer even more during a difficult period for the industry.
Why compensation matters now
Indirect carbon costs burden many energy-intensive industries across Europe. Compensation helps mitigate:
- sharp increases in energy and production costs,
- potential loss of competitiveness compared to less regulated producers,
- the risk of production cuts or shutdowns in key sectors such as steel.
The assistance allows the company to maintain jobs, maintain production stability, and support further environmental modernization without losing competitiveness.
