During the construction of the Barakah nuclear power plant, the first operational multi-unit nuclear facility in the MENA region, Emsteel provided approximately 160,000 tons of nuclear-grade rebar, representing about 60 percent of the total rebar demand for the project.
Lower Scope 2 emissions and clean energy certifications
By accessing electricity generated at nuclear power plants, Emsteel directly reduces Scope 2 emissions and reduces the overall carbon intensity of steel produced in the UAE. The move also positions the company as the first steel producer in the region to use clean energy certificates in nuclear power plants, which increases its transparency.
Emsteel has now integrated clean electricity into 86 percent of its steelmaking operations and 14 percent of its cement production. In total, the group uses 1.48 million. MWh of atomic energy and about 0.65 million MWh of solar energy certificates in its operations. According to its long-term decarbonization roadmap, Emsteel is aiming for 100% clean electricity by 2030.
