A spokesman for British steelmaker liberty Steel confirmed that Dalzell's plate mill in Motherwell, Scotland, was restarting operations after receiving an order from the UK government, which the company described as a key step towards restarting production. The spokesman said liberty Dalzell was executing an order for the UK government, with the restart supported by slab supplies secured from local British Steel.
“We are looking to increase production in the coming months through a number of individual projects,” the spokesman said, indicating that additional contracts are expected to support higher utilization levels as operations stabilize.
The Dalzell facility, the only large-scale plate mill in the UK, is considered strategic important for the supply of steel sheets for defense and infrastructure purposes, including naval shipbuilding. The restart is consistent with broader efforts to strengthen domestic steel supply chains for critical government and industrial projects.
