Last December, China's production of pig iron, crude steel and finished steel totaled 60.72 million tons, 68.18 million tons and 115.31 million tons, down by 2.6 percent, 2.4 percent and 0.5 percent month-on-month, respectively, according to the National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS). This was the lowest monthly production volume of the year after the previous low of 69.87 million tons in November and the highest monthly volume of the year at 92.8 million tons in March. The low production level in December was expected, given the sluggish demand from subsequent consumers during the traditional cold winter off-season and the need to achieve annual production figures.
China's crude steel production decreased by 44 million tons in 2025, the lowest monthly volume in December.
In 2025, China's production of pig iron, crude steel, and finished steel totaled 836.04 million tons, 960.81 million tons, and 1.44612 billion tons, down 3.0 percent, down 4.4 percent, and up 3.1 percent year-on-year, respectively. This means that the production of unrefined steel in 2025 decreased by 44.2 million tons, which is lower than expected by market sources, with most expectations suggesting a drop of a maximum of 40 million tons.
