According to SSAB, the agreement represents the first time that a defense equipment manufacturer has officially committed to using decarbonized steel in its production processes.
Initial deliveries of SSAB Zero™
According to the agreement, cooperation between the two companies will begin with the supply of SSAB Zero™, while it is expected that the volume of supplies will gradually increase over time.
It is expected that at a later stage, cooperation will also expand to include SSAB Fossil-free™, which will further reduce the carbon footprint of steel used in Rheinmetall's manufacturing operations.
By integrating low-emission steel into its value chain, Rheinmetall aims to position itself at the forefront of efforts to reduce emissions in the defense industry.
SSAB Low-emission Steel Products Overview
SSAB Zero™ is made from recycled steel using electricity and biogas without fossil fuels, resulting in virtually zero fossil carbon emissions during the manufacturing process.
SSAB Fossil-free™ is made from iron ore using HYBRIT® technology. The HYBRIT® process replaces coking coal with fossil-free hydrogen, which makes it possible to produce steel with significantly reduced carbon emissions.
