According to local press reports, between 2025 and early 2026, the project of the new Metinvest Adria steel plant at the former Lucchini site in Piombino has made significant progress in institutional terms, although it has not yet entered the operational construction stage.

As previously reported by SteelOrbis , a program agreement was signed in Rome in July 2025 (Accordo di Programma) on the reconstruction of the steel hub in Piombino as part of the Conference on the Reconstruction of Ukraine. The agreement signed by Metinvest Adria and the relevant public stakeholders (Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy - MIMIT, Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport - MIT, Ministry of Environment and Energy Security - MASE and Ministry of Labour), together with the regional authority of Tuscany and the Municipality of Piombino, envisages the construction of a next generation steel plant. The total investment amounted to approximately €2.5 billion, including €1.5 billion related to the supply of Danieli technologies, with an estimated employment impact of approximately 1,100 stable jobs, direct and indirect.

As part of the same process, a development agreement (Accordo di Sviluppo) with MIMIT was also defined and a SACE insurance guarantee was secured, effective upon approval by the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF). Commenting on the signing of the agreement, Minister Adolfo
