In the period from June 2025 to January 2026, Ukrzaliznytsia held 209 auctions for the sale of scrap metal, during which 79.6 thousand tons of raw materials were sold, of which 30.3 thousand tons were shipped to buyers. Following these sales, the railway operator currently has about 91,700 tons of scrap metal in stock.
Future sales plans
According to the company's forecasts, Ukrzaliznytsia plans to sell a total of 220,000 tons of scrap metal in 2026. It is expected that a significant portion of this supply will come from the dismantling of old freight wagons, with about 130,000 tons of material available for self-cutting and sale.
Market context
The resumption of scrap metal auctions in 2025 follows the suspension of trading for about 18 months following a legal dispute at the end of 2023, further reducing the available raw materials on the market.
The sale of scrap metal has also become an important source of internal revenue for the railway operator in the face of financial pressure, when the Ukrainian government had to allocate more than 4.3 billion UAH to cover wages.
