In January of this year, the total steel production in Ukraine amounted to 406.4 thousand tons, compared with 480.2 thousand tons in the same month of 2025, according to data published by the Ukrainian Steel Association Ukrmetallurgprom. 300,800 tons or 74.0 percent of total steel production were exported, while 105,600 tons or 26.0 percent were consumed in the domestic market. In January 2025, 286,100 tons, or 59.6 percent of total steel production, were shipped abroad, while domestic sales totaled 194,100 tons, or 40.4 percent of total steel production. As a result, total steel exports increased by 8.1 percent, while total domestic steel sales decreased by 45.6 percent year-on-year.
In this month, exports of flat rolled products increased by 1.3 percent to 157,500 tons, while exports of semi-finished steel products totaled 124,200 tons, which is 53.9 percent more than last year. In January, exports of rolled products totaled 19.1 thousand tons, a decrease of 61.7 percent compared to the same period last year.
The share of semi-finished products in exports in January was 41.29 percent, significantly higher than the 28.21 percent recorded in the same month of 2025, and the share of flat rolled products in exports was 52.36 percent, lagging behind the 54.35 percent recorded in the same month of the previous year. In addition, the share of long products decreased to 6.35 percent from 14.70 percent recorded in January 2025.
Meanwhile, in the same month, domestic steel consumption decreased by 26.5 percent year-on-year to 218,500 tons, of which 112,900 tons or 51.67 percent were imported. However, in January 2025, domestic steel consumption amounted to 297,100 tons, of which 103,000 tons or 34.67 percent were covered by imports.
In January, the total volume of steel imports to Ukraine amounted to 112,900 tons, which is 9.6 percent more than last year. In particular, Ukraine imported 85.6 thousand tons of flat rolled products, which is 3.9 percent less than last year, and imports of long products increased by 25.2 percent compared to the previous year and amounted to 13.9 thousand tons. The country's exports of semi-finished steel products in this month amounted to 13,400 tons, compared with 2,800 tons recorded in January 2025.
At the same time, the share of flat rolled products in imports in the same month was 75.82 percent, compared with 86.50 percent recorded in January 2025, and the share of long products increased to 12.31 percent from 10.78 percent recorded in January 2025.
