According to data published by the Japanese Association of Ferrous Metallurgy (JISF), in January of this year, domestic consumption of steel products in Japan's total was 3.60 million metric tons, down 4.5 percent from December last year and up 1.6 percent year-on-year.
In the first month of 2026, the consumption of steel products in Japan's construction sector decreased by 3.2 percent to 638,654 metric tons, while the consumption of steel products in the Japanese automotive sector totaled 940,311 metric tons, up 1.9 percent year-on-year. This month, Japan's shipbuilding industry consumed 243,192 tons of steel products, which is 0.9 percent less than in the same month of the previous year.
