The production capacity of ArcelorMittal's new $475 million iron ore processing facility located at the Serra Azul mine located in Itatiayus, Minas Gerais State, will triple from 1.5 million metric tons (metric tons) to 4.5 million tons, the company's Brazilian division announced today in a press statement.
The company said that the expansion of production is planned to service the ArcelorMittal plant in Mexico with fine pellets with an iron content of up to 67 percent and low levels of impurities.
The ore will be transported to a local railway terminal, then loaded and transported 500 kilometers to the port of Sudeste in Rio de Janeiro State, from where it will be shipped to Mexico.
The Serra Azul mine has been in operation since 1969 and was acquired by ArcelorMittal in 2008. The new structure will extend the mine's service life until 2056.
The expansion of the Serra Azul mine is part of ArcelorMittal's $5 billion investment cycle, which began in 2022 and is in the final stages of completion. The program includes modernization of industrial enterprises, expansion of the portfolio of products and services, acquisitions and investments in renewable energy.
