Acciaierie Bertoli Safau (ABS), the steel division of the Italian Danieli group, has officially started construction of a hybrid digital green plant. This €400 million facility, of which €355 million is dedicated to machinery and digital systems, promises to place the Pozzuolo del Friuli plant among the world leaders in the production of special steel.
According to the ABS statement, “for the first time in the world, as many as 12 innovative steel production processes developed by Danieli will be integrated in one plant, from scrap management to continuous casting quenching, including smelting, secondary metallurgy, chimney. gas purification, water recovery and full automation.”
With an estimated annual capacity of 730,000 tons, the new line aims to redefine the concept of industrial efficiency. The plant inherits and develops the path established ten years ago with the Saturno-QWR line, confirming the ABS strategy focused on high-quality special steels.
The hybrid digital green plant serves as the cornerstone of a wider industrial plan. Between 2023 and 2028, ABS will invest a total of €817 million. The goal is to achieve a transformation that will reduce emissions by 30 percent by 2030 and complete the modernization of two existing furnaces at the site in the province of Cargnacco.
With these measures, the group's production capacity will increase from the current 1.4 million tons to more than 2.1 million tons per year.
This announcement corresponds to guidelines established in May 2024, when the Danieli Group announced an investment of 600 million euros over two to three years aimed at developing ABS, with the goal of bringing its turnover to 3 billion euros.
