Strong growth in pig iron imports to Turkey in January-February 2026, changes in the supply structure

In February of this year, Turkey's pig iron imports totaled 168,514 metric tons, which is 25.5% less than in January and 218.0% more than in the same period last year, according to preliminary data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK). Meanwhile, the value of these imports amounted to $58.0 million, down 26.2 percent from the previous month and up 188.3 percent year-on-year.

In the first two months of the year, pig iron imports to Turkey amounted to 394,623 tons, which is 86.5% more, while the value of these imports increased by 68.9% to $136.5 million, year-on-year.

During the specified period, Russia was the largest source of pig iron imports to Turkey, which supplied 333,756 tons, which is 151.1 percent more than last year. Russia is followed by India with 50,950 metric tons and Kazakhstan with 9,918 metric tons, down 61.2 percent from the same period last year.

The 86.5% increase in imports in January-February was mainly due to shipments from Russia, which increased by 151.1% and accounted for the majority of the total, while the 25.5% year-on-year decrease recorded in February indicates that purchases were made in large batches rather than following a steady flow In terms of supply, Russia's clearly dominant position stands out, while India's emergence as a new supplier and a sharp decline in imports from Kazakhstan indicate a shift in supply.
