The Metinvest Adria project to build a new environmentally friendly steel plant at the former Lucchini site in Piombino has taken another step forward. Invitalia, Italy's national agency responsible for managing development contracts, has accepted an incentive for an industrial proposal submitted by a joint venture between Metinvest Group and Danieli for the construction of a new low-emission steelmaking plant. The approved support amounts to 285 million euros and will be used for the construction of electric furnaces and production infrastructure related to the project. The total investment is still estimated at around 3.2 billion euros, which confirms that this is one of the most significant industrial projects currently underway in the European steel sector.
As SteelOrbis previously reported,The Piombino Metinvest Adria project has been declared an outstanding national strategic interest by the Italian Council of Ministers, with the expected appointment of a special commissioner to speed up procedures. The plan concerns the construction of an electric steelmaking plant with an installed production capacity of more than 2.7 million tons per year as part of a broader effort to restart the Piombino steel hub and reindustrialize the region. The project includes the construction of a modern electric arc furnace for low-emission steel production in line with Europe's goals for decarbonization and the ecological transition of heavy industry. According to the Italian Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Made in Italy, the investments confirm the strategic importance of the hub in Piombino as part of the national plan to strengthen the competitiveness of the Italian steel industry.
Italy's Minister of Entrepreneurship and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, called Invitalia's decision "a crucial step to relaunch the Piombino steel hub and create a modern, competitive and sustainable steel supply chain." Urso stressed that the project is "one of the most important industrial investments in Europe," capable of combining innovation, environmental sustainability and skilled employment.
In support of the project, the Ministry also allocated 92 million euros to complete the construction of the northern pier in the port of Piombino, an infrastructure that is considered strategic for the full realization of industrial investments. The port works are part of the necessary infrastructure to support the future operation of the facility and logistics related to the new steel mill.
