According to the latest data released by the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC), China's coal imports (all types) totaled 182.623 million tons from January to May this year, down 3.2 percent year-on-year.
In May alone, China's coal imports totaled 33.265 million tons, down 0.6 percent month-on-month, while year-on-year, it fell 7.7 percent.
Domestic coal production remained strong in 2026, with major producing regions such as Shanxi, Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi continuing to increase production. As a result, the volumes of imported coal are replaced by domestic coal. Meanwhile, domestic coal prices had a certain advantage over international coal prices, which also helped limit the demand for coal imports to some extent.
