According to LKAB, the permit is a crucial step for the future of the 135-year-old mining company, encompassing both continued and expanded production, as well as measures aimed at reducing the company's exposure to air and water. The permit also includes the establishment of a demonstration plant for the production of sponge iron without fossil fuels and a new apatite processing plant that will supply apatite concentrate to the planned LKAB industrial park in Lulea.
LKAB stated that this decision is important to ensure the safety of its operations for decades to come, strengthen its competitiveness by further processing pellets into non-fossil fuel sponge iron, and expand its business of extracting critical minerals. The company added that Malmberget's mineral resources currently exceed 2 billion tons, which is more than the total volume extracted since the start of operations in 1890.
