India and Canada have set a goal of finalizing the framework for a free trade agreement (FTA) by the end of 2026, an Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday, June 17.
The target date for concluding a free trade agreement was set during talks between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 meeting in France, said official.
“Both sides expressed satisfaction with the progress in the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations and reaffirmed their shared goal of concluding negotiations in 2026,” he said.
The complementarity between the Indian and Canadian economies has highlighted the importance of sustainable and reliable supply chains for global energy and food security, added he.
Earlier this year, during the Canadian Prime Minister's visit to New Delhi, India and Canada entered into key pacts for the supply of uranium and critical minerals, he said.
