In January-May this year, total steel production in Ukraine amounted to 2.34 million tons, compared to 2.51 million tons for the same period in 2025, according to the Ukrainian steel association Ukrmetallurgprom. About 1.48 million tons, or 63.2 percent of total steel production, was exported, while 860,000 tons, or 36.8 percent, was consumed domestically. Between January and May 2025, 1.54 million tons, or 61.5 percent of total steel production, were shipped overseas, with domestic sales accounting for 966,000 tons, or 38.5 percent of total steel production. As a result, total steel exports fell by four percent and total domestic steel sales fell by 11.0 percent year-on-year.
During the period, flat-rolled steel exports fell 3.2 percent to 695,000 tons, while semi-finished steel exports totaled 610,000 tons, up 19.1 percent year-on-year. calculus. In January-May, exports of long products amounted to 175,000 tons, a decrease of 43.7 percent compared to the same period last year.
The share of semi-finished products in exports in the first five months amounted to 41.22 percent, which significantly exceeds the figure of 32.23 percent recorded for the same period in 2025, and the share of flat products in exports amounted to 49.96 percent, slightly exceeding the 46.59 percent recorded for the same period last year. In addition, the share of long steel decreased to 11.82 percent from 20.18 percent recorded in January-May 2025.
However, during the same period, domestic steel consumption increased by 2.2 percent year-on-year to 1.59 million tons, of which 732,400 tons or 45.99 percent were imported. However, between January and May 2025, domestic steel consumption amounted to 1.56 million tons, of which 591,800 tons, or 37.99 percent, was covered by imports.
In the period from January to May, total steel imports to Ukraine amounted to 732,400 tons, which is 23.8 percent more than last year. Specifically, Ukraine imported 457,200 tons of flat steel, up 0.5 percent year-on-year, while long steel imports rose 66.2 percent year-on-year to 208,900 tons. Exports of semi-finished steel products of the country in the first five months amounted to 66.3 thousand tons against 11.4 thousand tons recorded in this period of 2025.
At the same time, the share of flat rolled products in imports for the same period amounted to 62.42 percent, against 76.83 percent recorded in January-May 2025, while the share Long rentals rose to 28.59 percent from 21.23 percent recorded
