Russian steelmaker Severstal has announced that its key asset, the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant (CherMK), has begun preparations for the launch of its first roasting machine.
The company stated that the preparation covers equipment, buildings, engineering communications and the main production systems of the pellet production complex, which marks the final stage before the release of the first products. The hot start of the first roasting machine is scheduled for the third quarter of 2026. After commissioning, the new complex will supply pellets to Severstal's blast furnaces, which will increase productivity and reduce pollutant emissions by 96 thousand. 67 percent of the technological equipment has been assembled and installed. Prior to the start of the drying work, the company will complete the installation of air and exhaust ducts, gas pipelines and cable lines, as well as equipment for the main control room, communication systems and exhaust gas filters.
Evgeny Vinogradov, General Director of the Russian Steel and Resource Assets division of Severstal, said that the pellet production complex cost 116 billion rubles. It is the largest investment project in the history of CherMK. He added that the project will allow Severstal to almost completely replace the existing sintering plant with more advanced raw material processing technologies.
