India's finished steel production was tentatively estimated at 41.0 million tons in the first quarter (April-June) of fiscal year 2026-27, an increase of 5.9% year-on-year, according to data released by the Ministry of Steel on Tuesday, July 7.
Significantly, steel consumption increased by 8.3% to 41.6 million tons ahead of domestic production in this period, the data showed.
Finished steel production in June 2026 was estimated at 13.8 million tons, an increase of 6% year-on-year, while consumption increased by 7.2% to 14.2 million tons.
However, despite the growth in domestic production and consumption, India remained a net importer of steel in the first quarter of the current fiscal year. Imports during the first quarter were estimated at 2.06 million tons, an increase of 49.2 percent, while exports also increased by 31.4 percent to 1.59 million tons year-on-year.
