China plans to build about 21,000 kilometers of expressways in 2026–2030 to complete its national highway network, the National Development and Reform Commission said on November 4.
The country intends to speed up construction of routes along the Yangtze River and ring roads around major metropolitan areas. It also plans to expand capacity and introduce intelligent systems on existing highways, including the Lianyungang–Khorgas, Shenyang–Haikou and Beijing–Hong Kong–Macao expressways.
The commission said local highway construction would be managed to keep its scale and pace in balance. The projects are expected to support steel demand during the 15th Five-Year Plan period.
