Sustainability indicators: ten -year achievements of steel industry

WorldSteel has published 2013 indicators, which have provided sustainable activities and trends in the industry over the past ten years.

Worldsteel General Director Edwin Basson said: “The steel industry has called eight stability indicators in 2003, ensuring the development of the industry in order to meet the growing demand for steel on a sustainable basis. Particular attention is paid to environmental, social and economic indicators, as well as reporting in the field of steel industry. ”

He added: “We are one of the few industries that have been on the global level about what has been done since 2004. In 2005, 35 steel companies took part in the reporting report, and at present more than 90 companies joined the program. We will continue to encourage all representatives of the industry to participate in this initiative, which benefits not only to society, but to individual companies, allowing you to compare performance and use experience, each other. ”

The recently published report contains indicators from 2003 to 2012. In general, the metallurgy improved most of its indicators, including seriously improved the quality of steel, increasing techniquity of the structure using metal rolling. As for environmental indicators, the average values ​​of 2 decreased from 1.8 in 2005 to 1.7 (ton with 2/t rivet steel), the energy intensity decreased from 22.9 to 19.6 (gj/ton of raw cast steel) by 2012.

The indicator of the effectiveness of the use of materials also remained relatively stable and was about 96 (% of the material that is converted into products) between 2003 and 2012, with the exception of 2011. For social indicators, the loss of working time due to injuries (LTIFR) has shown a stable and noticeable decline from 2005 from 7.6 to 1.6 (injuries/million spent hours).

Regarding economic indicators, investments in new products and processes indicate a steady growth of investments. The average value of investments in new processes and products from annual income in 2012 reached 10 percent. The distribution indicator of the economic value (EVD), which was launched in 2007, indicates its increase from 2008 to 2012. The average EVD result in 2012 amounted to 97% of the revenue.
