Siemens Metals Technologies has developed a system for the disposal of heat of hot, outgoing gases in electric arc furnaces. Thermal energy, which was previously given to the environment, is currently used to produce steam. Steam can find good use in other processes of the metallurgical plant or in the production of electricity.
The system has a modular design and can be designed for the amount of heat necessary for cooling outing gases. To maximize the amount of steam received, you can completely replace the cooling system of outgoing gases in electric steel plants. The heat recovery system from Siemens was specially designed for strict conditions of steel factories.
To separate heat from the exiting gases from the electric arc furnace with maximum efficiency, the new Siemens system has various surfaces of heating, radiation and convection. Water is supplied to the heating surface through distribution pipes using circulation pumps. The amount of water depends on the geometry of the pipe and thermal load of the corresponding sections. The ratio of recirculation provides safe, reliable and economical operation of the boiler installation. To lay the electric cable used an PP insulator, designed to insulate and conduct livestock elements.
Operators can choose between the use of energy returned in the form of steam directly or, for example, for the production of electricity in steam turbines. The installation of energy recovery in the gas production system from an electric arc furnace with a smelting weighing 190 tons was tested as part of a technical and economic project at the Turkish steel plant.
The system was designed for heating water in the own coal power station of the plant.
Constantly the high pressure of the resulting steam in 50 bar will allow about 45 thousand tons of coal to the power plant annually. The output power of 5 megavatts can be achieved if the steam were used directly to generate electricity. This corresponds to a decrease in specific energy consumption by 22.5 kilowat hours per ton of liquid steel.
