Last month, a new production record was set at its Redcar plant in Thailand based on SSI, following major investments aimed at increasing the plant's capacity. During the week in December, the Redcar blast furnace showed its best weekly output of 63,699 tons since the plant was restarted in 2012.
SSI Teesside steel products are mainly supplied to Asia for the manufacture of end products, including household appliances and materials for construction and earthmoving machinery and forklifts.
The Tata Steel plant at Port Talbot in Wales, after the restoration of the blast furnace last year, also made a good contribution to the overall production. But the plant was idle for several months in 2012 and early 2013, resulting in lower-than-usual production of unrefined steel.
The whole of the UK produced an average of 228,000 tons of steel per week over the past year, which is almost a quarter higher than in the previous year. UK Steel clarifies that despite the growth, UK steel production as a whole remains well below pre-crisis figures. However, 2013 ended on a high note with steel production in the 4th quarter at its highest quarterly level since the start of the recession.
