For the first time in more than two years, a political conversation took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York between US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In accordance with the statement of the US government, the meeting focused mainly on the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine. Further details were not disclosed. However, it can be assumed that both were trying to draw corresponding red lines for Ukraine and for Syria.
What they really talked about is unknown, and even the local media dubbed the meeting as "secret negotiations." TASS previously reported that Putin wanted to talk to Obama about Syria. White House spokesman Josh Ernest said ahead of the meeting that Obama wanted to talk about Ukraine.
Obama and Putin also met during a lunch with several leaders, attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. They shook hands and got closer to each other during the toast.
Obama's speech was directed against Russia, Putin again spoke in his speech about the creation of the Syrian conflict, clearly not naming the United States, which led to outside intervention. Although the tone of the two performances was harsh, common interests were noted - fighting IS. Obama is now under pressure because Putin has formed a coalition with China and Iran and wants US allies in Iraq and Saudi Arabia to appease. This threatens the Americans with a significant loss of influence in the Middle East.
It is possible that Putin wants to deliberately drag Obama into the conflict in Syria in order to neutralize it in other regions. Moscow may also lose vigilance in Ukraine. Nevertheless, the US government has reduced interest in Ukraine, at least for the time being. Only the EU and its taxpayers keep the country afloat financially. Even in Washington, one can hear that the current government of Ukraine is in doubt.
