Five years ago, a consortium of four leading telecom operators from four countries signed an agreement to build and maintain a new cable system called the Europe-Persia Express Gateway (EPEG). The system is designed to operate from Germany in Eastern Europe, Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran and the Persian Gulf countries.
Iran has so far accelerated the development of the Europe-Persia Express Gateway (EPEG) project on its territory and EPEG, which is due to start operating by the end of 2016, Iranian Communications and Information Technology Minister Mahmoud Vaezi said. He said Iran had signed a € 145 million agreement with French company Alcatel to purchase the necessary equipment. Half of the equipment for the EPEG project was supplied by Alcatel to Iran, and the rest will be delivered shortly.
EPEG's design capacity is 3.2 terabits per second with a total length of 10,000 km, of which 9,500 km will be onshore fiber optic cable. Delta Telecom, one of EPEG's partners, will participate in the creation of the route in Azerbaijan.
