The apology from the Ankara authorities for the downed Russian plane last year is, according to many analysts, a pretext for a "renewal" of gas cooperation between the two countries. And its most important element will be the construction of a gas pipeline from Russia to Turkey and further to Southern Europe.
Until recently, it seemed that the pipeline was not destined to be. Last year, following the incident with a Russian military plane, the Kremlin ordered an examination of the scope of economic cooperation with Ankara. There is an opinion in Moscow that within the framework of the policy of the current President of Turkey, this country is not a reliable partner and dependence in the field of gas transportation cannot be favorable. So, now the question of building a Turkish stream, a pipeline to supply gas to the southern part of the EU with transit through Turkey, has turned out to be very dubious.
In turn, Turkey itself informed that they do not want to buy gas from Russia anymore, because it causes difficulties. But now there is information that "the willingness to get to work is high." What happened? The most important role is played by the presence of common interests, as experts say, both sides may not want to, but in fact are practically doomed to interact with each other.
Turkey is consuming more and more gas, and the easiest way is to buy it from Russia. And for Moscow, the export of raw materials is one of the main sources of budget revenue. Experts say that both sides will soon return to the issue of building the pipeline. At the moment, the exact estimates of the construction cost are already known. The investment is estimated at $ 11.4 billion. The pipeline will connect the south of Russia with the south of Europe. The pipeline route should go to the Black Sea and further through Turkey and Greece. The pipe will be able to transport more than 50 billion cubic meters of gas annually.
