The British Parliament this week approved the resumption of the country's strategic nuclear submarine fleet. After an hour-long debate, 472 parliamentary delegates voted for the costly £ 31bn (€ 37bn) program, while 117 deputies voted against it. New Prime Minister Theresa May named Russia and North Korea among the biggest, real threats.
The vote reopened a plan that comes from the UK Labor Party. While Labor leader Jeremy Corbin opposed the resumption of the deployment of a nuclear-powered submarine fleet, the majority voted in favor of the weapons program. He said that the threat of "mass murder" has never been an effective tool in the field of international relations.
The British nuclear deterrent submarine currently consists of four Vanguard class submarines equipped with a Trident missile system. Ships will now be gradually replaced with new models.
The opposition politician's question was: "Will we be ready to launch a nuclear attack that would lead to the death of innocent men, women and children," and without hesitation the answer was "Yes", reports The Evening Standard. May explains that the nuclear threat is not complete - on the contrary, it has increased and "the threats from Russia and North Korea are quite real."
New British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson wants to expand his country's participation in world politics. “After leaving the European Union, the UK will play an even greater role on the global stage than ever before,” Johnson said at a news conference Tuesday after meeting his American counterpart John Kerry in London. "I want to make the UK an even more important global nation."
Kerry and Johnson also highlighted the special relationship between Britain and the United States. “I have come to London to reaffirm the special and inextricable relationship between the US and the UK,” Kerry said. Johnson and Kerry subsequently met in London with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and other European colleagues to discuss the situation in Syria.
