According to the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF), global stainless production increased by more than 4 percent in the first half of 2016. However, in Europe, in particular in Central and Eastern Europe, production is declining.
Growth in Asia is driven by China and several other countries in the region. China produced 11.729 million tonnes, an increase of 7.9 percent year on year. Stainless steel production in China slowed slightly in the third quarter as plants in Hangzhou were temporarily halted due to the G20 summit. MEPS analysts expect a return to growth in the last quarter of this year.
Other Asian economies achieved slightly lower growth, posting a 3.4 percent gain. In two quarters, 4.842 million tonnes were produced. In the third quarter, to reduce the pressure on prices for Chinese steel due to the rise in the cent in South Korea.
Regions in which ISSF saw a decline were Eastern and Central Europe, where 126,000 tonnes were produced, down 5.2 percent. The largest loss occurred in the Americas, where 1.363 million tonnes were produced, down 6.2 percent.
Worldwide stainless steel production totaled 22.067 million tonnes, an increase of 4.1 percent.
