Last year, LNG imports to the EU increased by only 0.1 percent compared to 2015. While Russian Gazprom in the same period increased gas exports to Europe by 12.4 percent. In 2016, the company's gas supplies to Europe reached more than 179.3 billion cubic meters.
This situation is due to economic considerations. Gas pipelines are cheaper. LNG, for various reasons, is difficult to compete with pipeline gas. However, despite this, there are more and more gas terminals operating in the European Union. They act as a security buffer.
LNG terminals are currently only partially used. Nevertheless, at almost any moment they can receive cargoes of liquefied gas. The total capacity of regasification is 5 billion m3 of gas.
