US law allows import restrictions for reasons of national security. Based on this, President Donald Trump on Thursday signed a directive requiring verification of the impact of steel imports on US national security and potentially associated risks.
Trump signed the document at the White House in the presence of steel leaders as well as representatives of public sector workers' unions. In accordance with the directive, a report containing conclusions and recommendations for further action in order to ensure national security and comprehensive support for the steel industry is to be submitted to the president within 30-50 days.
American steel, which is used for armor and ships, among other things, must meet special requirements. The United States wants to have certainty about the standards and quality of materials used to build national security facilities.
US metallurgists noted that the president understands the fundamental importance of the steel industry to the US economy and national defense. They praised the fact that Trump's goal is to protect the domestic steel market and its employees.
Steel industry trade unionists noted that the sector has been battling unfair competition from foreign manufacturers for more than 30 years. They expressed confidence that the directive will contribute to the development of the steel industry and the creation of new jobs.
