Poland hopes to play more than its current role in securing gas supplies to Ukraine. However, for this to happen, investment is needed.
Ukraine is trying to free itself from the dominance of Russian gas. Today, Ukraine has completely abandoned the purchase of raw materials from Russia, although several years ago more than 30 billion cubic meters of gas were supplied. Now Ukraine is doomed to fuel other foreign partners. However, in practice, Kiev still buys gas from Moscow, only with the help of Western intermediaries. Ukrainian authorities say it will be more expensive to buy gas directly from Russia. In addition, Moscow takes Western companies seriously by not shutting off gas supplies for no apparent reason.
Ukraine is looking for an alternative. And such diversification will be possible thanks to Poland, according to a country friendly to Ukraine. President Lek Kakzinski said they can import 5 bcm of liquefied gas. Even greater hopes are pinned on the planned construction of a connecting pipeline with Norway. Thus, if investments are made, Poland will be able to supply even 10 billion cubic meters of gas. However, there is a serious obstacle - the possibility of sending it to Ukraine. The technical capabilities of the transfer are limited. It would be necessary to expand the gas pipelines.
Both sides are aware of the need to invest in infrastructure linking Poland and Ukraine. It is tentatively assumed that with the new system it will be possible to increase the capacity of Polish gas exports to Ukraine from 5 billion m3 to 8 billion m3 of gas per year, depending on the technical conditions for the transportation of gas transmission systems. If investments are realized in a larger volume, Ukraine could receive even 20-25 percent of the gas consumed in the country. At least Poland would like it very much. There is little left to do - investment.
