During a meeting with parliamentarians from Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, the Lithuanian Minister of Energy raised the issue of energy security in the Baltic region, including the construction of Nord Stream 2 and a nuclear power plant in Belarus.
The Minister stressed that the planned construction of the Baltic gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 certainly contradicts the goals of the energy policy of the European Union (EU). If this project is implemented, then energy security will not grow, but on the contrary, it will weaken and increase dependence on Russia.
Lithuania seeks to fundamentally determine whether Europe needs another pipeline from Russia. In addition, according to Lithuania, Russia should take measures to maintain gas transit through Ukraine.
The minister also said that the nuclear power plant in Belarus, built for Russian money and with the help of Russian technology, poses a threat not only to Lithuania, but also to the entire region.
Thus, Lithuania is trying to mobilize the countries in the region to ensure that the conditions of the competitive situation are not distorted.
