Russian LNG will also ship to Boston in January in January. The deal follows a surge in gas prices on the east coast of the United States.
Gas from Russia is transported by tanker Gaselys, owned by the French corporation Engie. The liquefied gas will be transported from the UK terminal on Zern Island to the Everett regasification terminal near Boston. Gaselys is due to arrive in Boston on January 22nd.
The feedstock comes from a liquefied gas plant from the Yamal Peninsula, launched in early December 2017 by the Russian company Novatek. At the time of loading into Russia, this gas belonged to the Malaysian group Petronas. The end customer was Engie, who reserved the ability to ship to the Everett terminal.
The gas transported by Gaselys is the first import shipment since 2014 to the Everett terminal. This delivery completely contradicts the development strategy of the American market, according to which the United States is becoming a major exporter of LNG.
The current situation is justified by extreme weather conditions on the US east coast and a rapid jump in gas prices. So that high prices may persist for some time.
According to James Henderson of the Energy Research Institute in Oxford, Russian gas supplies from the Yamal Peninsula to the United States are not turning into a trend, but only showing the growing globalization of the gas market. “The point of LNG is that gas is directed where there is demand,” Henderson said.
