Brazil's Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services (Mdic) has confirmed the introduction of a quota system for steel exports to the United States. This is to avoid section 232 tariffs.
“Restrictive measures are the sole responsibility of the United States and are administered by its administration. The Brazilian government, in contact with the steel sector, will closely monitor its impact on Brazilian exports, ”says Mdic. Brazilian authorities continue to work to find solutions that better meet the needs of the steel and aluminum sector, with bilateral and multilateral agreements, the ministry confirms.
Under the new US import system, Brazilian steel exports will be subject to quotas based on the average over the past three years (2015-2017). The quota for semi-finished products will be 100% of the average, and for finished steel products, the quota will be 70% of the average, according to Mdic.
A similar quota system was agreed by Argentina, although in this case the system did not reduce the total volumes exported from Argentina to the United States.
