Peru increased its iron ore production year on year in the first half of 2018.
“Iron production growth in the first half of the year was supported by good results from January to May, which helped contain the -23.6% drop in June. The decline was due to a drop in the productivity of CPS1's mining division Shougang Hierro Perú (-29.6%), confirms MEM.
In January-May, the production of Peruvian iron ore amounted to 5,030,466 tons. It increased by 9.8% compared to 4,582,549 tonnes in the same period in 2017. In June alone, production reached 615,830 tons, or -23.6% less than in May and -24.6% lower than in May. These figures include the release of SHP and its joint venture with the Chinese non-ferrous metals group Baiyin Minera Shouxin Perú (MSP).
SHP is a subsidiary of Shougang Group, a major Chinese steel company. The Peruvian company extracts, processes and sells iron ore from its deposits located in the Marcona region of the Nazca province, in the Ica region of Peru.
