Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC) has announced its decision to completely rebuild its railway wheel plant at its Osaka steel complex. The decision is in line with the theme set out in the 2020 Mid-Term Management Plan announced in March this year, which calls for strengthening the production capabilities of domestic factories.
NSSMC will improve levels of precision and quality using unique rotary stamping technology. The overhaul will expand the production base to ensure a stable supply of higher quality wheels of a higher grade to customers not only in Japan but worldwide. In addition, the overhaul will bring the facility into line with the latest European standards, which will increase the supply of wheels to European countries. At the same time, NSSMC has declared its commitment to improve the safety and reliability of railway wheels by leveraging the capabilities of its products.
The company plans to invest about 2.4 billion Japanese yen in the modernization of the wheel production plant. The overhaul is expected to be completed by the end of fiscal 2020.
By the way, NSSMC is the only railroad wheel manufacturer in Japan. The company, one of the leading players in the global railroad wheel market, is a major supplier of high quality railroad wheels in Japan and other countries around the world.
