World pig iron production in January amounted to 101.9 million tonnes

The volume of production of blast furnace iron by countries of the world amounted to 101.884 million tons in the first month of the opening of 2019. The above production data was published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) based on the data collected. of the 38 reporting countries that accounted for nearly 99% of all global pig iron production in 2017.

The Asian region provided the bulk of the pig iron production within a month. The region produced 80.107 million tons, which is approximately 79% of world production. China was the largest producer in the region with production of 62.426 million tonnes. India produced 6.315 million tonnes during the month, making it the second largest producer in the region. Production in Japan was 6.043 million tonnes. Other primary producers of pig iron in the Asian region were South Korea (4.014 million tonnes) and Taiwan (1.310 million tonnes).

Pig iron production in North America was 3.020 million tonnes. The volume of production in the United States for the month amounted to 2.120 million tons. Production in Canada was 530,000 tons, followed by Mexico 370,000 tons. Production in the South American region was 2.674 million tonnes. Brazil's production stood at 2.431 million tonnes, accounting for nearly 91% of regional production for the month. Other major producers were Argentina (170,000 tonnes), Chile (50,000 tonnes) and Colombia (20,000 tonnes).

In the EU-28 region, 7.794 million tons were smelted in January this year. Total production in the CIS region was 6.189 million tonnes. According to Worldsteel, the monthly production in the Oceania region was 385,000 tons.
