The Asian region accounted for over 70% of global steel production during the month.
The latest steel production statistics released by the World Steel Association point to a notable jump in liquid steel production in Asia during March this year.
Production of crude steel in Asia in March this year amounted to 109.054 million tons, which is significantly higher by 7.4% compared with production in the same period last year. In March last year, production in the region amounted to only 101.546 million tons. The total production in the first three months of this year increased by 7.0% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 312.859 million tons.
China, the leading producer in the region, reported a 10% increase in production. The country accounted for almost 74% of the region's total production during the month. The volume of production in China was 80.326 million tons. India continued to be the second largest steel producer in the region, pushing Japan to third place by a narrow margin. Production in India was 9.412 million tons and in Japan - 9.084 million tons. Production in India declined slightly by 1%, while production in Japan was unchanged from the same period last year. The top three manufacturers accounted for almost 91% of the total monthly production in the Asia region.
Steel production in March 19 by other countries in the region were: South Korea (6.266 million tonnes), Taiwan (2.030 million tonnes), Vietnam (1.359 million tonnes), Pakistan (290,000 tonnes) and Thailand (250,000 tonnes).
