World crude steel production for 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association was 137.1 million tonnes in April 2020, down 13.0% from April 2019.
China produced 85.0 million tonnes of steel in April 2020, an increase of 0.2% over April 2019. India produced 3.1 million tonnes of crude steel in April 2020, down 65.2% from April 2019. Japan produced 6.6 million tonnes of steel in April 2020, down 23.5% from April 2019.
EU production is estimated to be 10,729.0 Mt in April 2020, down 22.9% from April 2019. The United States produced 5.0 million tonnes of steel in April 2020, down 32.5% from April 2019. CIS production is estimated at 6,554.0 million tonnes in April 2020, a 22.6% decrease compared to April 2019.
Worldsteel noted: "Due to the ongoing difficulties associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, many of this month's numbers are estimates that may be revised with a production update next month."
