The American Institute of Iron and Steel (AISI) today reported that the country imported a total of 1.391 million tonnes in June this year. Imports for the first six months of this year amounted to 12.387 million tons. The above figures are based on the most recent data published in the USA.
Total steel imports fell sharply by 23% in June from May's final data. Imports through June also recorded a marked decline of 20.8% over the previous year.
Monthly imports of finished steel fell 12.7% to 1.310 million tonnes. Imports in the first half amounted to NT 8.632 million, a significant decrease of 26.2% over the same period last year. In addition, the finished steel market share was 21% in June and almost 19% in the first six months of 2020.
According to the AISI forecast, the total volume of finished steel imports for the entire 2020 will amount to 24.8 million tons and 17.3 million tons, respectively.
The finished steel product, which reported the largest increase in imports from the previous month, was pipeline pipes, with imports up 30%. Imports of galvanized sheets and strips also increased significantly (by 23%). The largest offshore suppliers of imported finished steel from the United States were South Korea, Germany and Taiwan.
