There are a large number of methods for the production of metal and specifically cast iron products, among them: casting, displacement, machining, rotation, stamping press, stamping, powder metallurgy and others. The most popular for its simplicity and low cost is the method of metal casting. This method is used in almost all modern foundries for the production of cast iron products.
There are two main ways of producing cast iron products in foundries: using a disposable mold (into the ground) and serial production (a reusable mold is required). The essence of casting into earth is that foundry has a specially prepared area where you can dig holes (molds) for future castings. Further, hot metal is poured into these holes, where it takes on the required shape and hardens. After that, this finished cast iron product is removed from the mold, if possible without violating the integrity of the model, if necessary, the model is made of two parts, then it is simply opened.
After the casting has cooled, it is not possible to use the mold in the ground for a long period of time, as a result of which the foundry has to constantly search for new lands or change the existing soil layer to a new one in order to use it to create new castings. It is logical that this production method is very costly and environmentally friendly. A similar method of manufacturing cast iron products is used only in obsolete enterprises that do not have enough funds to introduce new technologies, namely, models made of plastic or other metal alloys.
The modernized foundries have a wide technological base that allows the use of serial molds. These forms can and should be used many times, while carrying out a number of cleaning measures that insignificantly affect the service life of the model. The use of such new models allowed foundries to significantly expand the range of products, which included the following cast iron products : covers, pulleys, housings, hubs, cups, calipers, carriers and other parts of modern technology.
All of the above listed products require precise execution and additional processing of products. After the casting has hardened, it is processed in the machining workshop on special milling machines. More technologically advanced enterprises purchase more sophisticated equipment that can be programmed to obtain a specific thickness of the final product.
