Liz Watts, vice president of NSW Energy Coal at BHP, said: "Our commitment is clear, we want to focus on the environmental, economic and social outcomes when closing the mine to help set up the region for long-term success and ensure a positive legacy from BHP's mining in the Hunter Valley."
The agreement provides for BHP to leverage infrastructure synergies: the existing Maxwell underground mine in Malabar will use the mine's void to store tailings from Mount Arthur, increasing safety and cost-effectiveness upon closure.
