Domestic steel consumption in Japan decreased by 1.5 percent in January-September 2025

In September of this year, domestic consumption of steel products in Japan totaled 3.60 million metric tons, up 6.9 percent from the previous month and 3.6 percent year-on-year, according to data released by the Japan Ferrous Metallurgy Association (JISF). Meanwhile, in the first nine months of 2025, the country's domestic steel consumption decreased by 1.5 percent year-on-year to 31.91 million metric tons.

In the first nine months of this year, the consumption of steel products in the Japanese construction sector decreased by 3.9 percent to 6.04 million metric tons, while the consumption of steel products in the Japanese automotive sector amounted to 8.24 million metric tons, which is 3.6 percent more than year-on-year. During the specified period, Japan's shipbuilding industry consumed 2.09 million metric tons of steel products, which is 3.3 percent less than in the same period of the previous year.
