South Korea has announced that it plans to close all its coal-fired power plants.

At the same time, a closure schedule has already been approved for 40 facilities, providing for decommissioning by 2040. The closing dates of the remaining 21 will be determined "based on economic and environmental feasibility," and a specific plan is planned to be prepared next year.

"In the long term, Korea plans to create a system in which renewable energy sources will serve as the main energy sources, and nuclear energy will be an additional source; coal will be completely decommissioned, and gas will be used mainly as an emergency energy source," said Kim Sung-hwan, Minister of Climate, Energy and Environment. "Thanks to this, we plan to move to a fully decarbonized, green economy."

South Korea is the fourth largest importer of coal in the world (after China, India and Japan). Australia is the largest supplier of coal to South Korea, and Russia is one of the three or four largest exporters.
