Recycling Europe rejects claims of scrap metal leakage, urges evidence-based EU policy

Recycling Europe, formerly known as the European Confederation of the Recycling Industry (EuRIC), has opposed the European Union's proposals for a "scrap leak," saying existing EU monitoring data shows no evidence to support such claims. The response came after Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic announced preparatory work for a trade measure targeting the alleged leak, which is expected to be adopted by spring 2026.

According to the organization, policy decisions should reflect verified data rather than political narratives, especially when potential trade measures could change market dynamics.

The Group emphasizes that the recycling industry, consisting of thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises along with larger companies, forms a structural cornerstone for closure, decarbonization, resource autonomy and material security in Europe.

Strategic Sector for EU Green Transition

Recycling Europe welcomed Sefcovic's recognition of the strategic importance of the sector. The organization notes that the EU's ability to achieve its decarbonization goals depends on a healthy, competitive recycling industry supported by stable domestic demand and viable outlets for surplus recycled materials.

Without these conditions, the group warns that Europe risks weakening one of the most effective instruments for reducing emissions and conserving resources.
