Stainless steel imports to India fell by more than 20 percent in January-October 2017 as Chinese shipments plummeted
Stainless steel imports to India decreased markedly in January-October 2025, mainly due to a sharp decline in supplies from China, improved domestic stainless steel production, and cautious purchases amid volatile raw material prices.

The total volume of stainless steel imports amounted to 730,000 tons, which is 21 percent less than 930,000 tons in January-October 2024. About 720,000 tons were finished stainless steel flats, imports of which fell by 22 percent from 900,000 tons in January-October 2024, while the influx of rolled products was recorded at 23,300 tons, down 16 percent from last year's 27,600 tons.

Serial import

Imports of 300 series apartments increased by 14 percent year-on-year to 330,000 tons from 290,000 tons during the reporting period last year, boosted by steady demand from processing industries and high-tech applications. In contrast, imports of the 400 series dropped sharply by 29 percent year-on-year to 170,000 tons. The 200 series flats remained relatively stable with a moderate decrease of 3 percent per 20,000 tons, while other grades adjusted significantly due to changes in supply patterns and reduced import dependence.

300-series longs fell by 3 percent, reflecting sluggish activity in manufacturing and design. The 400-series longs showed a modest 7 percent increase, driven by continued demand for automotive components and appliances. The 200 series declined by 7 percent, while other specialties dropped by 36 percent.
