Sectors that play a crucial role in Turkey's exports and employment and are heavily dependent on stainless steel have issued a joint statement as the anti-dumping investigation launched at the request of domestic producer Posco Assan approaches its final stage. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) emphasized that in the current environment, where there is no domestic production of stainless steel and existing capacities are insufficient to meet national demand, any additional duty will have a serious impact on production, employment and exports. The final decision on the investigation is expected to be announced within one month.
Industry representatives say that the import of stainless steel is necessary, additional duties will have serious consequences
According to the joint statement, Turkish companies are forced to import stainless steel because there is no domestic production.
Industry representatives warned that the decision, which entails the introduction of additional duties, will lead to:
- production losses,
- the loss of almost 300,000 jobs,
- a decrease in exports by 1.5 billion dollars,
- inflationary pressure in the domestic market.
We emphasize that the additional duty will cause an increase in prices for all products that use stainless steel, with higher raw material costs affecting consumer prices, the statement added that the introduction of an additional duty on top of the existing 12% customs duty on stainless steel will undermine competitiveness and make it impossible to maintain the viability of industries using stainless steel.
