India's steel imports during the first seven months (April-October) of the current financial year 2025-26. was provisionally estimated at 3.8 million tonnes, down 34% year-on-year, according to data from the steel ministry's Joint Plant Committee (JPC).
However, despite the fall in imports, the country remained a net importer of steel even as exports rose 25.3% during the period to 3.5 million tonnes, the data showed.
The largest shipments came from South Korea during the seven-month period at 1.4 million tonnes, followed by China, Japan and Russia.
Total finished steel production between April and October was provisionally estimated at 91.6 million tonnes, while crude steel production stood at 95.7 million tonnes. The data showed that finished steel consumption was 92.2 million tons, up 7.4% year on year.
