The new loader is part of a broader 5 billion Swedish kronor ($526.29 million) logistics and infrastructure investment plan through 2029, which also includes automated silos, upgraded conveyor and unloading systems, new fine storage and other port upgrades.
With the new loader, LKAB aims to improve efficiency, safety and environmental performance in its export chain.
The port of Narvik is a critical hub for LKAB exports - it handles most of the ore shipped from the Kiruna and Svappavaara mines via the Iron Ore Line (Malmbanan + Ofoten Line) railway corridor, which connects Northern Sweden with the Arctic Seaport. About 22 million tons of iron ore are loaded through Narvik annually for global export. About 300 ships enter the port each year, and about 200 of them are loaded with LKAB products.
LKAB produces about 80 percent of all iron ore mined in the EU, making its export infrastructure vital for the supply of raw materials to Europe. The updated Narvik port loader increases reliability and throughput, which in turn supports metallurgists across Europe. Logistics modernization helps LKAB maintain competitiveness, especially in a global environment where efficiency and sustainability are increasing.
