ArcelorMittal Brazil launches wind project with long-term decarbonization goals

ArcelorMittal Brazil запускает ветроэнергетический проект, преследующий долгосрочные цели по декарбонизации

ArcelorMittal Brazil announced the start of commercial operation of the Babilônia Centro wind farm in Bahia following the early completion of the project, marking an important milestone in its decarbonization strategy and integration of renewable energy sources. The project, developed jointly with Brazilian energy company Casa dos Ventos, strengthens the company's long-term competitiveness by reducing energy costs and increasing access to low-carbon energy.

The 553.5 MW project, comprising 123 turbines and fully connected to Brazil's national grid, has an investment cost of BRL 4.2 billion ($728.55 million) and operates under a 35-year permit from the Brazilian National Electricity Agency (ANEEL). ArcelorMittal has secured 267 MW of dedicated wind power, its first renewable wind power venture in the country.

Supporting energy diversification and decarbonization

ArcelorMittal Brazil said the project will diversify its energy mix matrix, will enhance operational competitiveness and contribute to meeting its decarbonization commitments. The company aims to achieve 100 percent renewable electricity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050.

During the construction phase, ArcelorMittal supplied low-carbon XCarb® rebars made from 100 percent recycled metal and 100 percent renewable electricity, reducing emissions from steel production by approximately 60 percent. The wind power complex is capable of avoiding approximately 204,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, strengthening the company's path to low-carbon operations.
